Title: CentOS 7 Update to CentOS 8 Stream
Post by: emerysteele on December 13, 2020, 06:01:13 PM
Hello,

I've heard about the news of CentOS 7 EoL in 2024. Just wondering if there will be a way to upgrade to CentOS 8 Stream, keeping all CWP configuration + data in place?

Would be nice if there is an easy upgrade path as migrating everything over to a new machine is a pain in the neck.

centos 7 is still the recommended version so migration to centos 8 is not yet recommended.

From first hand experience, there is no way to go from CentOS 7 to CentOS 8 or Stream.
We had to bring up new servers and the use the migration tool built into CWP.

That being said, studio4host is correct. CWP is written primarily for CentOS 7.
And since that support doesn't end until 2024, I would wait and see what happens with Rocky and CloudLinux.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi i have seen the migration procedure while search in google is that migration will do migrate without data loss? here the procedure which i have seen in google search....

CentOS 7 to CentOS 8 Stream Migration:
CentOS 7 will be supported until June 2024, while CentOS 8 will be supported until the end of 2021.
To migrate from CentOS 7 to CentOS 8 Stream, follow these steps:
Update the system: sudo dnf update -y
Install CentOS 8 release stream repository: sudo dnf install centos-release-stream -y
Adjust repositories to point to CentOS Stream: sudo dnf swap centos-linux-repos centos-stream-repos -y3.

Better to ELevate to AlmaLinux 8, then upgrade to AlmaLinux 9 once CWP comes out of EL9 beta.
(In other words, the current best wisdom is to skip over a rolling release like CentOS 8 Stream, which is not a viable foundation for a server.)

Like almost all of CWP's documentation, that recommendation is out of date. The word from experienced users is that pinned, delayed repos is not sufficient to make a stable server out of a rolling beta release. Go with AlmaLinux.
