CWP still references CentOS, even though they are abstracting it to be Control Web Panel. It currently requires an EL7 or EL8 distribution.

I would not recommend CentOS Stream 8, as it is EOL soon. Look toward AlmaLinux 8.8, as you can then ELevate to v9 when CWP fully support EL9 distributions (hopefully soon, per the devs).

I run CentOS 7.9 on my CWP servers, but am looking to ELevate to AlmaLinux next year (2024) when CentOS goes EOL. If I were building a fresh server today, it would AlmaLinux 8.8 to ensure a smooth transition to EL9 when CWP supports it and is stable.

CentOS 7 is EOL.

AlmaLinux 8.x with CWP 8 is what new servers should be using.
