Simple backup help

How does remote backup work?

Does it copy a folder / backup to a remote server or send the backup directly to the remote server?

I've always assumed that any backup would be an rsync of the target directory regardless of remote or local.

The folder structure of the backup is identical to the local backup its just off the server
