CentOS migration plan for 2024?
« on: March 05, 2023, 12:11:47 AM »
I'm currently running CWP Pro on CentOS 7 as recommended by https://control-webpanel.com/installation-instructions#step2.  I'm going to be building a new server later this year with a go-live date of April 2024, so what OS can I expect to be using then?  CentOS 7 goes EOL at the end of June 2024 and CentOS 8 Stream expires a month before that.

I'd be tempted to go for Rocky 8 which EOLs at the end of May 2029 but the installation guide says "Compatible but with possible issues, Recommended is to use CentOS 8 Stream or CentOS 7".  Same caveat for Alma 8 and Oracle 8.  Thanks.

Based on Starburst's recommendation and other reading I have done, AlmaLinux 8 is my plan -- around the same timeframe as you. (Stream is lock-in, no way out if you go that route... Rocky is a rather rocky road, from what I hear.)

Hello,

Based on the information you provided, CentOS 7 will reach its end of life (EOL) at the end of June 2024, and CentOS 8 Stream expires a month before that. Considering your go-live date in April 2024, it's important to choose an operating system that will still be supported at that time.

While Rocky 8 seems like a viable option with an EOL at the end of May 2029, the installation guide suggests using CentOS 8 Stream or CentOS 7, mentioning potential issues with compatibility. It might be worth exploring further to ensure a smooth transition and compatibility with your setup.

I hope this helps!

Currently the cwp team is working many hours to make everything work on el9, everything will be completed soon

Might help you decide. I am going to try Alma because of their migration scripts called ELevate

Josemnunez's announcement of EL9-support is the game changer I have been waiting for. So now the 2024 plan will be AlmaLinux 9 with CWP support. THANK YOU! Go CWP Team!

I know 9 support is being worked on, and is being tested.
But for some reason they are going to still use PHP 7.4, instead of 8.1 or 8.2.

Better than 7.1/7.2, I suppose. But still EOL already, so 8.1 seems like a better choice, having their needed IonCube support. But I suppose it's all still fluid until next year when we get a full release.

ionCube 13.0.2 supports PHP 8.2.x

But the coding form PH 7.1 to 7.3 isn't that different.
Allot would have to be re-written for 8.x, but would be better long term & for security.
