CentOS Stream Support
« on: December 09, 2020, 07:20:38 PM »
Hi,
I just read that CentOS 8 support will end in 2021 and that CentOS Stream will be the replacement going forward.  Does the CentOS Web Panel support CentOS Stream today and if not should we expect support later in 2021 since CentOS 8 will be EOL in 2021?

Also I see that their are directions to migrate from CentOS 8 to CentOS Stream.  Can these be used to migrate with CentOS Web Panel or does it require a clean install?

Migration instructions: https://www.centos.org/centos-stream/

This is a REALLY big deal. I've been reading up on this since last night. Here are the big highlights that everyone needs to understand.

  • CentOS is essentially becoming beta software. It will no longer carry the reliability and stability it has in past years.
  • CentOS 7 will be supported until 2024.
  • CentOS 8 will be only supported until Dec 2021 (yes, not a typo)

Lots of good reading on Reddit on the topic...

Sounds like the current CentOS community will be jumping ship to Debian, Ubuntu or FreeBSD. There is a possible CentOS fork in the future, also.

I'll be unfortunately leaving CWP Pro with this CentOS announcement and shiting towards Debian and ISPManager. It's a shame because I really liked CWP Pro.

till 2024 there is a long time and till then many things can and will change for sure its the same as with any other upgrade, for example, centos 6 to centos 7. However, CWP still recommends CentOS 7.

I hate the very short notice for the EOL for CentOS 8 of December 2021.
We just finished migrating from 7 to 8.

RedHat hasn't said what's going to happen to Fedora, but guessing that's ending also, since now Stream is taking it's place as a per-curser to the main RedHat build.

Stream is NOT as stable as CentOS by a long shot.

CloudLinux is talking about releasing a free version that will be based on the main RHEL modules.
We will have to see.

CentOS 8 just had a pretty good update yesterday from 8.2.2004 to 8.3.2011
Over 300 packages updated.

In case of requirement, cwp will also probably bring delayed repository from centos 8 RR which will be used as a stable version and this will be managed from CWP allowing you to switch on CentOS RR or stable/delayed repositories from CWP, so those already on CentOS 8 don't need to get panic :)

Here is the email about how CentOS Web Panel will be handling this in the future for anyone that missed it:

---

Hello,

As some of you already know that CentOS/RedHat decided to support only CentOS Stream in the future, here is some info about the end of the life for each version:

- CentOS 8 till the end of 2021
- Centos 7  till June of 2024
- CentOS 8 Stream will be only supported as an upstream version

Our plans are to have custom delayed repositories of the CentOS stream which will allow us to make the CentOS Stream a stable version.
We have already deployed and tested our own repositories for CentOS 8 Stream and we will keep multiple repositories allowing you to choose between the latest (default CentOS Steam), stable(CWP-repo), and delayed multiple stable versions(CWP-repo).
Management of the repositories for CentOS 8 Stream will be done from the CWP.admin and our plan is to have it released this month in December 2020.

Many people are scared about the CentOS 8 Stream but we see this as an opportunity to provide the latest new features to all our clients and with our custom repositories we can also guarantee stability.

There is also some news about additional new Linux branches coming from CentOS, we will probably support the best of them.
Some already announced coming soon is the CloudLinux OS.

Please note that currently we still recommend CentOS 7 as the best version to get installed as it also provides our CWP Secure Kernel which is very important for server security and especially for shared web hosting servers.

Best Regards

in short CWP will support centos 8 stream

you can choose our repo for stable operation with delayed updates (updates are provided by us when it is necessary in behalf of security and performance)
or  choose the default stream repos from centos

it's your choice and under both scenarios CWP will work.

I do believe CWP team needs to put a noticeable banner on the homepage of CWP talking about this... How they have a plan going forward after CentOS 8 and 7 are gone.
Users will jump ship and run to another Control Panel if they can't find this thread about CWP still planning to work after CentOS 8 and 7 are gone. If it's possible to migrate to Ubuntu (since they aren't planning to die any time soon) then mention that as well. Publish and make it easy to find the game plan on what the future holds, and needs to be done quickly for those who are scared. 1 year to move infrastructure isn't a lot of time.

Update: I see a new post in the CWP Wiki - http://wiki.centos-webpanel.com/the-future-of-centos-stream-with-cwp
This is what I'm suggesting. Put a link on the homepage directly to this article. It's critical to be found.

Good news for those with 16 or less servers in production.  RHEL 8 will be available for free on update 16 servers!

Hi to all of you,

Happy New Year ;)

My 1st post here though I already used CWP with CentOS 7 in the past and I was really pleased about it but I did not manage to set it as standard in the previous company I worked for. The fellows there were more Plesk maybe because of the icons... ;D

Now I changed company and my new fellows are real interested in CWP. We also found cool that the CWP Team decided to continue development for CentOS Stream after RHEL decided to "retire" CentOS 8... I'll not comment that.

In anyway; I installed CWP on CentOS Stream over the weekend, got myself a CWP Pro key and everything was fine till I decided to change PHP Version from the default to latest 7 and/or 8. No way to get PHP compiled. After analyzing the error in Line 53 of the php-rebuild.sh (/usr/local/src/php-rebuild.sh: line 53: /usr/bin/cmake3: No such file or directory) and some web search it appears that some packages/dependencies are missing such as cmake.

I managed to find some tutorial on the web where a fellow explains how to migrate from CentOS 8 to CentOS Stream and install CWP.

On the CWP website there are installation instructions (I apologize in advance to CWP Staff if my statement is incorrect) but basically following is missing:

Code: [Select]
yum install oniguruma oniguruma-devel gcc make gcc-c++ cpp kernel-headers.x86_64 libxml2-devel openssl-devel bzip2-devel libjpeg-devel libpng-devel freetype-devel openldap-devel postgresql-devel aspell-devel net-snmp-devel libxslt-devel libc-client-devel libicu-devel gmp-devel curl-devel libmcrypt-devel pcre-devel sqlite-devel libdb-devel enchant-devel libXpm-devel mysql-devel readline-devel libedit-devel recode-devel libtidy-devel libtool-ltdl-devel libwebp libwebp-devel expat expat-devel  cmake libmemcached libmemcached-devel
Code: [Select]
ln -s /usr/bin/cmake /usr/bin/cmake3
After installing running the lines above changing PHP version works without any issues.

I hope this is useful to other users that wish to use CentOS Stream

As I mentioned above, sorry in advance to CWP Staff if my statement is incorrect.

I wish you all a great evening.

BR

N :)
