Title: How can I tell whether a server reboot is required after updates?
Post by: kalybg on November 04, 2026, 04:12:31 PM
Hello,

I recommend checking whether a reboot is needed after system updates so that important changes, such as kernel updates, can take effect.

You can check from SSH with:
sudo dnf needs-restarting -r
My server had not been restarted for 20 days, so I checked it today. The command reported:
Core libraries or services have been updated since boot-up:
  * kernel
Reboot is required to fully utilize these updates.
More information: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/27943

After restarting the server, I ran the command again:

No core libraries or services have been updated since boot-up.
Reboot should not be necessary.

I'm sharing this because I'm sure many of you assume that everything is fine after an update. Well, actually, it's NOT... a restart is required.

Best regards,

It isn't necessary to reboot the server every time when some system library is updated.

Try to run:

dnf needs-restarting -s
and restart all listed services.

The modern kernels allow to patch kernel on fly too using kpatch for RHEL distros or similar utilites (kernelcare, etc). If you don't use such utiliters then reboot the server to apply the new kernel version.
